"Inspired By Radio Rwanda" Says EGI On Irresponsible Conduct Of Indian News Channels

Editors Guild of India (EGI), on Wednesday, slammed Indian news channels for irresponsible conduct that has enhanced the gap between communities and hurt sentiments.

“The incident that caused unnecessary embarrassment to the country could have been avoided if some of the TV outlets had been mindful of the nation’s constitutional commitment to secularism, as well as the journalistic ethics and guidelines that the Press Council of India has issued to handle a volatile communal situation,” the EGI said.

The statement further compared such news channels with infamous Radio Rwanda saying, “Instead, some of these channels prompted by the desire to increase viewership and profit were seemingly inspired by the values of Radio Rwanda whose incendiary broadcast caused a genocide in the African nation.”

This row started with a TV debate show on “Times Now” where BJP spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, passed derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammad ﷺ. Condemnation statements were issues from all across the Muslim world. Moreover, Al Qaeda responded with suicide attack threats.
