Some cops were injured on Friday during a protest near the Hanuman Temple on Ranchi’s Main Road after hundreds of people demanded the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
Police resorted to air firing and lathi-charge to control the mob that spilled out on the road after Friday prayers and pelted stones and shouted slogans.
“Few policemen have been injured. We are looking into the situation. We are reinforcing deployment,” a senior police official said. According to police, the protest had been going on since morning and picked up steam after Friday prayers. Many shops and establishments kept their shutters down in protest of the remarks.
Similar protests were witnessed in Uttar Pradesh. People raised slogans and pelted stones in the Atala area of Prayagraj after the Friday prayers ended.
