A division bench of the Delhi High Court on Thursday transferred former JNU student Umar Khalid’s bail plea in the alleged larger conspiracy case related to Northeast Delhi riots to a different bench for hearing on Friday.
Bench headed by Justice Mukta Gupta noted that the matter had previously been heard partly by a bench led by Justice Siddharth Mridul. As a result, the case has been transferred to the previous bench.
Khalid had filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging the trial court’s order denying him bail in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case.
Khalid, a JNU scholar and activist is among nearly a dozen people involved in the alleged larger conspiracy case linked with the Delhi riots 2020, as per the Delhi Police. His allegedly offensive speeches delivered in Amaravati during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens served as the basis for allegations against him in the riots case.
